Życie i dzieło. Recepcja i reminiscencje, Publishing house NOMOS, Kraków 2011.

Professor Walter Żelazny’s groundbreaking work sheds much needed light on L. L. Zamenhof’s Jewish, family, educational and intellectual background. Earlier, it was a ‘no-go’ area, due to prevalent antisemitism in 20th-century Europe, even among some esperantists. Yet, without a clear comprehension of the Esperanto creator’s Jewish and Central European world in the late 19th century, the success and attraction of this language and the concomitant movement cannot be explained. This monograph is a veritable treasure trove for scholars and the general reader interested in modern European history, language politics, Jewish studies, Esperanto or international relations. I am sure this book will be oft-consulted and heatedly discussed for decades to come.

Prof. Tomasz Kamusella, University of St Andrews, Scotland, UK

The author of the monograph presents a rich methodological and analitical dimension. It includes the methodology related to cultural studies, sociology, literary studies and linguis-tics. While employing such a wide range of analitical instruments, the Author succeeds in maintaining the coherence, demonstrating multicontextual perspective of the ideas which contributed to creating Esperanto. This approach is not only limited to Esperanto or its creator. It is rather  constellational highlighting of the most significant problems in the contemporary world through analyzing Zamenhof’s concepts.

Prof. Dariusz Wojakowski, AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow, Poland
